Cover art

So, why, you might ask, am I featuring a sci fi book cover on my blog? The answer (of course) is that I took the photographs that were the basis for the cover artwork for this series of books called 'Black Legion' by Michael G. Thomas. The photos also formed the basis for the art work on his previous 'Star Crusades' novels and I was also commissioned to take portraits of the author himself, which are used on promotional material and on his Amazon author page.

Michael is an established best selling sci fi author and his latest series transports the ancient tale of Xenophon and the Ten Thousand Mercenaries into the distant future. You can view his bio and other books *here* and his blog is called star-crusader (click on the name for a link).

The photo session itself was fun and frenetic. It is not often you get the opportunity to take photos of models with weaponry! I have posted two of the original photos, before they were turned into artwork. It is nice to see my work on the front of some books!

  1. Fabulous stuff. The book sounds interesting. Most alternative histories send modern weaponry, tactics and soldiers back in time. Reversing that is an interesting premise. I'll put these on the list for beach reading this summer.

    Cheers.

    1. I beleive the author has applied a little sci fi artistic licence and so it's not a literal transportation of the story of the Anabasis into the future. It has been getting some good reviews though. I hope you enjoy it.

  2. Hi, thanks for the mention in your blog entry, it is most appreciated. I've studied the Anabasis in great detail, it actually formed the large part of my Masters thesis. I've essentially created a whole new futuristic galaxy but based on the expansion of humanity in the past. The story itself though follows the Anabasis pretty closely. Those with an interest in history should enjoy the parallels and the odd change...I hope.

  6. I can't believe the transformation from photo image to book cover, totally amazing.

Just goes to show how easily we can be deceived these days, you never really know what is real and what is not.

I hope that you continue to win many more commissions such as this, infinitely more interesting than just straightforward portrait work, surely?

    Have a good week.

    1. Hi Yvonne. They are different from straight portrait work certainly, but I love doing location portrait shoots too. These type of shoots are frenetic and very pacey so good fun, but very hard work :) Thanks for the visit.
