Mist again.

I always have a camera of some sort on me. As a photographer I never switch off and I never know when I will see a great picture that I want to capture. So, when I took my dog for a walk this last weekend I took my Fujifilm X10 with me. It's lighter and more portable than my Canon 5D and lenses and so I often grab it when I go out.

The beach was thick with mist rolling in from the sea in a different sort of lazy wave. Though there seemed to be quite a few people around from the number of cars in the car park, the beach seemed empty as you could not see far into the distance. Every now and again some people and their dog would emerge from the mist like ghostly figures and disappear again as they passed by.  The mist did not deter my little retriever from his favourite game of fetch and I couldn't help but capture a few shots of him running around in the mist, an indistinct little shadow enjoying himself.

I'm very pleased with this particular photograph and gave it a vintage feel to exaggerate the mistiness. I'm currently working on a fine art collection and I am thinking of adding this one to it. What do you think?

  1. Hi,

Great shot and I get exactly what you mean about the 'vintage' quality of the subject matter and sepia colouring. It has to be a real candidate for your collection.

We live a bit further down the country on the Somerset/Wiltshire border and the weekend here was gloriously warm and sunny.

We haven't ventured as far as the coast yet this year, although we are equidistant to several resorts. We generally gravitate towards the South coast, Bournemouth and Portsmouth.

    1. Hi Yvonne. Nice to see you back here.

It was sunny and warm here too, so the mist rolling in off the sea was a surprise. From a photography point of view a nice one too :)

  3. A very atmospheric shot.

I like the out of focus edges and the fade to white vignetting too. I'm curious that you left it in colour though? Inside his mouth is red and there's a splash of yellow too (tennis ball?)...It would be interesting to see a full-on sepia version (just saying' :-) )

    1. Hi Rashbre. The shot was deliberately left in colour and has not been given the sepia treatment, rather the mist had subdued much of the colour which I then exaggerated. I'll try the full sepia nad see how it looks. Just for you :-)

BTW, you should really explore American college basketball. Good, good stuff.

    Cheers.

    1. Thanks Randall. As for the sport, my father has been trying to get me to like cricket, snooker and rugby for years. I prefer to participate than spectate I guess :)

  6. He is a cute little chap Dianne :) The vote seems to be to add it so it's in :)

As for the parking - three fences seemed particularly safety conscious!

  7. Hi there - I like the way the image is not completely sharp and crystal clear - It makes it far more realistic.

  8. Hi Stewart. Thanks. The mist was quite dense and so this is what the camera saw. Oh, I've tweaked it to exaggerate the desaturation effect that mist has, but the soft and diffuse effect is from the misty conditions :)
